Sump Pump Installation

I had a problem with my basement flooding for years, but never had anything more than a few inches of water, so I just tolerated the inconvenience and kept my belongings on pallets or cinder blocks. All of that changed when I went down to the basement to light the pilot one year and found 18 inches of water (which explained why the heater wasn't working).  I wasn't going to let that happen again, so I decided to install a sump pump. 

I designed my sump pump system after doing some research on leaky basements via the Internet. I found a lot of different opinions and designs, but nothing that appealed to me, so I decided to design my own. 

The idea behind my design is "the path of least resistance." During the rainy season, water saturates the earth around your basement and the water looks for the path of least resistance which is the concrete walls and floor of your basement.  My design provides an outlet through the through the walls and base of a drilled-out bucket in which a sump pump is placed. The sump pump kicks on and drains the bucket when the bucket fills about halfway. The basement never has a chance to flood since the pump sits in a bucket full of holes below the floor directly below the water table. I have had this system in place for years and have not had a drop of water enter my basement since I installed it.

Step 1.) Dig a hole in the basement 1 and 1/2 times larger than the bucket.


Step 2.) Place landscaping fabric and some pea gravel in the hole.

Step 3.) Drill holes on the side of the bucket as seen below.

Step 4.) Place the bucket in the hole.

Step 5.) Put the extra pieces of concrete in the hole.


Step 6.) Pour in fresh concrete and smooth with a trowel.


Step 7.) Drop a float operated sump pump into the bucket and attach plumbing.
